First admin numbers
The NIF is Portugal's tax identification number and usually the first official number you need when you move. A lot of later admin steps get easier once this is done.
For expats, the hard part is often not the form itself. It is knowing what to bring, which office route to use, and how this step fits into the rest of the move.
EU citizens, non-EU citizens, freelancers, employees, retirees, and families all end up needing a NIF. If you are planning a move or need to act through Portuguese institutions, this is usually the first admin number to sort out.
After the NIF, the next steps often include a bank account, NISS, freelancer activity setup, or residency-related registrations. If your move includes several connected steps, it is worth planning the sequence before you book appointments.
Use the one-off NIF service if this is your urgent step, or take the package route if your move includes several linked registrations.
